Blog Vs Vlog – Which One Is Best For Generating Income?

So you want to start a brand online? Want to talk about something you are passionate about? And even better make a income stream out of your passion? Both blogging and vlogging are great ways to do this.

In this article we are going to compare blogs and vlogs to see which is the best for you. Are you more of an outgoing person who loves talking? Or more introverted and don’t want your face on camera? Figuring out this will make it easy to choose between a blog or vlog. But it goes much deeper then this. There so many pros and cons to both that need to be considered.

I am going to assume that you want to start a blog or vlog (YouTube channel) to start making money. And ideally replace your current income from your job to allow you to travel the world and be location independent or spend more time with your family to enjoy life’s most cherished moments.

I can only talk from my own personal experience. I have tried both vlogging and blogging. And I was surprised which one ended up being more profitable for me. I love vlogging and documenting my travels and adventures as a over the shoulder look at my challenges when on the road. Also the process of editing videos and building a very tight community in the YouTube comments is amazing. But it was not the most profitable and it takes a lot more work and time to become profitable.

Below you can see an example of the daily vlogs I do.

The key with vlogging is trying to make videos that people are going to watch. And can gain traction in search. Often times people, like myself just do a day in life type video, which can be boring for many to watch and they just are not interested. Instead trying to create a video about a topic that can attract viewers is the key.

Blogging Vs Vlogging Money

Blogging Income per 1000 viewsVlogging Income per 1000 views
$39.50$4.48
* This is an example from my own earnings from both blogging and vlogging

I personally create vlogs about my travel on my bicycle across many different countries all over the world. And over time I was able to acquire a decent viewership of 1,000 to 2,000 average views per video. This is not much compared to many other vloggers. And it isn’t that much. This amount of traffic earns almost nothing compared to blogging.

Here is an example of my YouTube ad revenue for the past 28 days. I am no longer posting daily vlogs. As you can see this month I posted 2 videos. And in total the channel got just under 10,000 views for the month

This works out to be an average earnings of about $4.48 per 1000 views. This is very low, compared to the earnings you can generate from a blog. So let’s take a look at my blog for example.

In the month of July the blog earned around $3,000. With about 76,000 views. Which works out to be $39.50 per 1000 views. That is quiet the difference. I am making $35 more per 1000 views on my blog compared to what the vlogs on my Youtube generate.

It kind of was a burden at the beginning of my journey to realise that blogs make so much more money then vlogging. As I like creating videos so much more than blogging. But I guess I am still lucky to be making money from my love of travel. Which is a dream come true.

The thing about a blog is when you create the content and are ranking up the top in Google search for keywords that are being searched frequently. You can stay up there for a while without having to do much more work. Which means consistent income without much work. Which is great. Once you put in the work. For me it was about 180 article written and some time for google to rank the articles and start ranking.

With vlogging you need to keep making videos constantly to stay relevant and keep getting views. Sometime you canmake videos that are ‘evergreen’ but most vlogs are not that. But then again if you love that process why would you want to stop? But it is good to know that if you stop for a couple weeks you can still expect to get income coming in.

Blog And Vlog Difference

In a nutshell, if you don’t know. A blog is essentially a website with a collection of ‘blog’ articles which forms the content of a blog. While a vlog is a video version. A video of content that is often found on Youtube.

Both can be easy to create depending again on your preference. If you are a great writer a blog would be best. But video content is rather easy to produce. Especially vlog content. As all you are doing is explaining an idea by talking to the camera. if you are a great speaker this could be the way for you.

Pros To Vlogs

Vlogging can be more engaging than a blogging. With such video content the viewer can really connect to you on a deeper level. You are able to showcase your personality in video. When written content is so much more difficult to do so.

If you are doing tutorials or how to videos, vlogs can be the best as they show someone how to do things rather than telling them on a blog. Vlogs are great at building a strong connection with your audience.

One of the biggest pros to vlogging is that you can get quick traffic. Where blogging is the slow and steady road when it comes to traffic. It often takes 8 months before you can start to see any traffic coming to your published articles, as it takes time for Google to start trusting your website. But if you make a great video on YouTube. It can get suggested and be a big hit!

Pros To Blogs

You are able to get all your information across and in a well informed way. With written content you can explain tables and graphs in detail and really example everything thoroughly.

But the big one for me is that you make more money from a blog. At Least in my own experience, I was able to make a full time income from my blog. whereas my vlogs on my YouTube channel barely made enough for a dinner out. Especially with affiliate marketing. As you explain and recommend a product they are much more likely to click through and buy the product you are an affiliate for then going to your YouTube video description and purchasing that way.

Ultimately I believe the best strategy is to do both. I started vlogging and had built a small but well engaged and loyal following. And when it came time to start my blog some people started checking it out. But if you are starting a blog. Creating video versions for your blog articles on YouTube can help you rank in Google’s search. But also when you start getting traffic to your blog, people watch the videos on the article and this can help increase your views on YouTube too. So vlogging and blogging can be complementary and help for an overall strategy.
